What exactly is Colon Hydrotherapy?
Colon Hydrotherapy (or Colonics) is as old as man's civilization. It originated before Ancient Egyptian times and continued to progress until more sophisticated Colonic equipment was perfected around the turn of the century. Up to and including the late 1920's, many physicians had Colonic devices in their offices and these devices were also found in many hospitals too. In the early 1930's, the advances of medications and surgeries began to take precedence due to instant relief and monetary attractiveness. The purification and preventative techniques became less and less alluring. Recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in more natural approaches for healing the body and Colonics are rapidly regaining the respectability they have already earned. Unfortunately, many that are interested in Colonics, including members of the health profession are quite misinformed. It is the mission of many colon therapists to dispel any misinformation that exists and support the viewpoint of many natural health professionals.
What is the purpose of Colon Hydrotherapy?
Colon Hydrotherapy has many purposes and can be best explained by the following.
1.)It will remove waste material (impacted feces, dead cellular tissue, accumulated mucous, parasites) that have built up over the years in your colon. It is that waste material that can create several problems.
2.) It removes the waste material that is highly toxic. The poisons/toxins from the waste material released can circulate throughout your body via the bloodstream. Thus making you tired, weak and just generally not feeling well.
3.)The impacted fecal matter can inhibit the colon's ability to assimilate minerals and vitamins and absorb water will be gently flushed away over a series of colonics (usually 6-8 is needed).
4.)It will also eliminate the accumulated build up of fecal matter on the colon walls which inhibits muscular action resulting in sluggish bowel movements, constipation, gas/bloating and the inevitable result of these disorders.

As it is essentially a natural process, there is virtually no risk involved. All equipment used is properly handled, sterile and cleansed throughly by aseptic technique. The water used during a 30-45 minute session is free of chlorine and sediment and this is mandatory. Extra precaution will be taken with the elderly and those suffering from severe symptoms. Some contraindications are as follows: 1.)Bleeding 2.)Recent Abdominal Surgery 3.)Pregnancy (above 4 months) 4.)Inflammation 5.)Tumors The initial telephone conversation or appointment will be able to determine if you will be a candidate for Colonics or not.
What about disturbing the natural fluid and electrolyte balance in the body?
Electrolytes are the minerals (sodium and potassium) in the body that maintain the proper electrical charges and pH balance (acid and alkaline) in the various organs and tissues. The pH balance in the colon is very neutral and ideally slightly acidic. A strong acid or alkaline environment is not necessary because digestion does not occur in the colon. The major function of the colon is to reabsorb the fluid from the unformed feces, which is passed into it from the small intestines. After the fluid is reabsorbed the colon moves the formed feces into the rectum and out of the body. The majority of material released during the Colonic is formed feces that has already had the fluid and electrolytes removed from it. So the amount lost is extremely minimal and can easily be replaced from food and fluid we ingest.
Are Colonics habit forming? Can you become dependent?
No. Colonics are simply a tool intended to clean the colon and restore natural rhythmic muscular motion. The introduction of soothing purified water gently exercises the colon walls. The Colon Therapist can manipulate the flow of the water to mimic peristaltic action and in turn this will begin the reversal of the effects of a bowel with poor muscle tone and poor elimination. The therapists fulfillment comes from assisting you in healing your colon, not in making you dependent. Many people have sluggish colons and bowel movements do not return for several days following a good Colonic session. This is when people believe they are becoming dependent. If this does happen, it is a strong indication that extensive work is needed due to significantly decreased colon function. It will require strengthening and healing to be able to function as it should and to restore the muscle action.
Do Colonics hurt?
No. While it is difficult to ascertain each person's pain perception, the procedure is rarely considered painful. The introduction of water into the colon can cause the internal muscles to contract, usually experienced as minor cramping and your Colon Therapist is experienced in providing comfort measures and minimizing the discomfort you may or may not experience. These periods are very brief and easily tolerated. Most people are not accustomed to producing eliminated waste other than in private, so it is important to keep the communication lines open during the session to create a picture of the events happening in your colon. Most importantly, remaining relaxed and free from tension will promote a better result.
Are Colonics embarrassing?
No. Your privacy will be maintained at all times. The session room is very private and you will have the exclusive use of en-suite facilities during the treatment. There is an unwritten rule that anything that is communicated or visualized will remain within the boundaries of the client/therapist relationship - and it does. Many people are concerned about the odor often associated with enemas - everything is contained within tubing so the problem with odor simply doesn't exist. Except for the gentle insertion of the small speculum, you are completely covered throughout the entire procedure. Your Colon Therapist is a very caring and compassionate person and recognizes the needs of her clients right to strict confidentiality at all times.
